Hainan China

Hainan is a separate island in southern China that was developed specifically as a resort: people come for the sea, long beaches, hotels with pools and a mild winter climate. The infrastructure is aimed at holidays, from taxis and guides to large shopping malls.

The island is compact: any bay is 20 to 50 minutes from Sanya airport. That makes it easy to change beaches, restaurants and excursions without long drives, and it shortens travel time for families with children.

Sanya Phoenix International Airport (SYX) is the island's main gateway: 15–20 minutes to the city centre and Dadonghai, and 40–50 minutes to Yalong Bay and Haitang Bay. From the airport you can go straight to the hotel by taxi or by a pre-booked transfer.

The island has a north part, Haikou and its bay, and a south part, Sanya. Travellers almost always choose the south: more hotels, beaches and places to walk. The high-speed train between Haikou and Sanya takes about one and a half hours.

Yalong Bay is the greenest and calmest bay: a wide beach, large resort complexes and golf courses nearby. Haitang Bay is a newer resort area with big hotels, a water park and the largest duty-free mall; the water is clean but the wind is stronger.

Sanya Bay is closer to the city and the airport: cheaper, with many cafés and shops, but a plainer beach and water that is not always clear. Dadonghai is the liveliest option: restaurants, markets, a promenade and hotels within walking distance, though it is noisy and busy.

The best beach months are October to March: comfortable air temperature, warm sea and little rain. The island is also popular with domestic travellers then, so hotels cost more during public holidays.

From April to September it is hot and humid, with heavy rain and typhoons possible, especially in August and September. Summer trips are possible if you tolerate heat and are ready to change plans with the weather; prices are usually lower then.

Direct Almaty–Sanya flights appear in the winter schedule with different carriers and tour operators, and their availability and frequency depend on the season. Without a direct flight, options usually go through Guangzhou, Beijing, Urumqi or Dubai.

A connection adds four to ten hours and needs a time buffer, especially with separately purchased tickets. We check baggage, connection time and the domestic segment to Sanya, so the trip does not depend on one inconvenient connection.

Citizens of Kazakhstan do not need a visa for Hainan: China's visa-free regime applies — up to 30 days per entry and no more than 90 days in any 180 days. It covers tourism, medical treatment, business and transit.

At the border you may be asked for a return ticket, hotel confirmation and insurance, so keep the documents at hand. If other regions of China are planned, remember that the visa-free period counts from the date of entry.

Families do best with hotels that have a kids club, a pool and a gentle entry into the sea: most are in Yalong Bay and Haitang Bay. Golfers should look at hotels near the courses in Yalong and Haitang, while Haitang Bay, with the island's largest duty-free centre, is the most convenient for shopping.
