The atoll stretches from north to south and holds dozens of islands, some of them occupied by resorts. Dive sites with manta rays and whale sharks sit close to the tourist islands, so trips do not swallow a whole day.

Ari Atoll attracts experienced divers and travellers who want a first snorkelling encounter with large animals. If you are coming only for the beach and the pool, the difference from North Male is small and the journey is longer.

Ari resorts take their own islands, and size varies widely: there are compact islands with a single lagoon and large complexes with several beaches. Size also determines the restaurant choice and the number of guests.

Choose an island not only by villa but by where the reef sits: on some islands the house reef drops away immediately, on others snorkelling is possible only from a boat. Islands on the outer rim often offer better visibility and more interesting snorkelling.

The distance from Male to Ari Atoll is long, so the seaplane is the fastest option: the flight takes about 30–45 minutes. Seaplanes fly only in daylight and carry limited baggage, and late arrivals sometimes need an overnight in Male.

Some islands can be reached by a domestic flight and boat, and a few resorts offer a direct speedboat — longer and dependent on the swell. The exact route is set by the island, so the transfer is checked before booking.

Ari Atoll is one of the Maldives' key places to meet manta rays and whale sharks. Resort dive centres run trips to manta cleaning stations, to the walls and to the areas where whale sharks feed, with try dives for beginners.

Currents on the outer reefs can be strong, so some sites suit experienced divers only. For snorkelling, join organised outings with a guide and keep your distance from the animals — a safety rule and a condition of local excursions.

November to April is the dry season in the Maldives: less rain, calmer seas and better visibility. Diving and transfers are more predictable then, but resort rates are higher.

May to October brings rain and stronger wind, with lower hotel prices. For manta rays and whale sharks, plankton and currents matter more than the month, so ask the dive centre on your island about the season.

As on other atolls, meals are taken at the resort: full board or all inclusive. Larger islands offer more restaurants, but the package costs more — compare exactly what the rate includes.

The budget depends on dates, island, villa category and meal plan, and the seaplane adds noticeably to the bill. Plan separately for diving, equipment hire and sea trips, which are rarely included.

The atoll suits divers, snorkellers and couples who pair the beach with underwater experiences. Honeymoons work well thanks to private villas and dinners on the sand, but the journey takes longer than to North Male.

Families with children should look for a shallow lagoon and a short transfer: the seaplane is tiring and strong reef currents are no place for small swimmers. The manager points out islands with a kids club and a safe entry into the water.
